Rock Concerts – Montclair Park

Updated April 2024

The Montclarion 1970

In 1970 the Montclair Recreation Center held bi-weekly rock concerts. The shows were co-sponsored by the Center and the Montclair Junior Women’s Club.

The bands were not obscure, but rather the sort of groups that headlined local clubs or played third on the bill at the Fillmore West.

Admission was a $1.00 to $1.50

The concerts suddenly stopped in the middle of 1972. Not sure why.

I found the advertisements in the Oakland Tribune’s “Wednesday Teen Age” and “What’s doing…where…” sections.

The Concerts lasted until the fall of 1972.

I commend the leaders of the recreation center for doing this. I can imagine a lot of people in Montclair did not like the idea (see below)

Lots of Memories of the Concerts

Speaking of memories, many people remember more prominently named bands playing there. I don’t doubt them; I just haven’t located any info on the concerts.

I was alive and living in Montclair during this timeframe. But I have no memory of the concerts. I know I would have enjoyed going to them.

*Green Death with Kurt Steele did the light show

From the Forgotten Montclair Group – Their light shows were mostly two shallow glass bowls, placed on an overhead projector. The bottom bowl held oil and food coloring, and the top bowl fitted inside it, allowing them to squish the colors around in kaleidoscopic patterns. They set up their equipment and chairs on a table in the back of the room where the band played. Despite the low-tech process, their light shows were very fresh and added a lot to the atmosphere of the rock concerts.”

  1. Very cool. I moved to Oakland in the mid 70’s but did venture to Montclair except to go the Equinox

  2. I remember many of these shows, and was there the night of the police incident. Only after I read the newspaper article did my memory kick into gear. What a scandal at the time.. Those were great times. Last, RIP Kurt Steele. You were a great guy!

  3. I used to contribute to the weekly light show with hand-painted abstract film loops that played over and over with the intent of enhancing the notionally “psychedelic” effect of the oil/water light projections.

I do NOT remember the police incidents – I hope you can repair or recapture the broken links to the Montclarion and Tribute newpaper articles!

  4. I remember that I first saw the classic funk band Graham Central Station (fronted by Larry Graham, an Oakland resident and original bass player for Sly and the Family Stone) at one of these shows, but I don’t see it in the list so far and can’t guess the date. I also contributed to the light shows put on by Kurt Steele with “psychedelic” hand-painted film loops that played repeatedly from a 16mm projector along with the classic oil+water+food coloring overhead projector technique.

  5. Would love to see what the Montclarion said about the alleged police brutality incidents – I don’t have any personal remembrance of them from that time. Unfortunately it looks like there are some broken links or missing images in this post that would have addressed the situation.
